The US Department of Agriculture predicts that Bangladesh may overtake China as the world’s largest cotton importer in the current crop season.

The ongoing economic recession and wage increases in China caused by inflation has opened up an opportunity for Bangladesh to push ahead of its rival. It has been independently reported that Bangladesh will import a record 5.75 million bales of the fibre and China is projected to import only 5.5 million bales. Bangladesh's share of the global cotton-export market doubled from 1995 to 2012, mostly because of the strong performance of their garment sector.
