As per data gathered form the regional conference on economy and information technology the annual cotton capacity in China’s Xinjiang Autonomous Region has increased by 150 per cent. The total textile sector investment in this region reached nearly 9.4 billion dollars last year.
The Xinjiang region produces about 60 per cent of China’s raw cotton. In June 2015, the State Council issued an official guideline supporting the textile and garment industry in the hope to increase local employment and boost exports. This initiative has paid off as 112,300 workers were newly recruited in the sector in the region during 2016 alone.
The target for this year is set to create over 100,000 additional jobs in the textile sector through labour intensive projects supported by local government and the garment manufacturing industry. During the past three consecutive years, the Xinjiang region has been boosted with an investment of over 90-billion-yuan in the textile industry, an amount equivalent to the total investment in the sector from 1978 to 2013.
